WHAT IS THE GULF SOUTH HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION?
The Gulf South Historical Association, a consortium of Gulf South colleges and universities including the University of South Alabama, the University of West Florida, Pensacola State College, the University of Southern Mississippi, Southeastern Louisiana University, and Tyler Community College, preserves and promotes the history and the cultures of the Gulf South within state, regional, national, and international contexts through a friendly exchange of scholarly research before the interested public.
The GSHA sponsors an annual conference every October that rotates each year among the states of the Gulf South. Established scholars, students, and interested members of the public are invited to participate in the annual conference either by presenting papers centered on current research, serving on discussion panels, or simply attending the conference sessions. The conferences include meet and greet receptions sponsored by the GSHA, multiple varied sessions highlighting cutting edge research revealing the history and cultures of the states of the Gulf South and the Carribean Basin, and an annual awards banquet among other events and activities. The conferences stress a friendly exchange of ideas designed to educate through the presentation of cutting edge research and to entertain in a manner unique to the environs of the Gulf South. Each conference offers theme presentations, particularly through the keynote address at the annual banquet, but sessions remain open to presentations on any subject relevant to advancing understanding of the history and cultures of the Gulf South and Caribbean Basin.
The Gulf South Historical Association is headquartered at the Center for Southeast Louisiana Studies at Southeastern Louisiana University. For additional information contact the Center at [email protected]
